Oh how times have changed. It doesn’t seem so long ago that Kermit the Frog was singing “It’s not easy being green” Not so true these days. Now any company with the GREEN label is sexy and getting high valuations. Let’s start discussing who deserves the valuation and who doesn’t

Houdini - there are loads of tidal energy companies out there, but none that are public. As with other energy segments, there are many different and interesting approaches being researched and developed, including wave energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy and even leveraging the desalinization process through extracting the delta of energy between converting salt water to fresh water.

No real significant commercialization of the technologies at this point and the contribution to the grid is inconsequential as yet. But there is alot of attention looking in this direction, as the ocean represents and endless source of potential energy.

This June, there is actual the 5th annual Energy Ocean conference being held in Galveston which will garner more attention to the sector.

Here is a companies that could be an early benefactor from the space:

* Oyo Geospace (Nasdaq:OYOG) - equipment manufacturer, also a good company to know that will benefit from deepwater drilling.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is working on becoming the first in the U.S. Northeast to build a wind farm off the Atlantic coast.  Under current legislation the state of New Jersey is pushing to get a quarter of its power from renewable sources by 2020 to reduce the states carbon impact on the environment.  The project will have the capacity of 350 megawatts and provide upwards of 110,00 homes with electricity.  The wind farm will be situated 20 miles of the coast with as many as 200 windmills.  This just goes to show you that our countries politicians are looking at the options and realize in order for us as a country to play a part in the energy crisis we need to start looking at alternative energy solutions and start implementing them so that we can meet our energy demand over the next 20 years.

Anyone have any thoughts on some companies that could potentially take advantage of this opportunity and others around our great nation?

Thus far almost every state has a wind farm installed however there are not enough of them to make a big enough impact on our power grid.  Here is a link that shows the country’s current wind capacity in Megawatts.

A lot of companies in the solar power industry have not been doing all that well - ESLR, TSSP.PK, WWAT.OB, and others are languishing despite the much-vaunted potential of solar.

I really like HYGS. They are preforming well in the market and the idea of ever-improving battery life for cars and other machines is exciting.

I just read the SCP article about American Superconductor. They are going to become the great info structure to link all the green energy sources, like wind, together and create a more efficient grid for our country.

An improved grid will be necessary if most people convert to electric cars. all the cars charging would drain the current grid for sure!

The more and more innovative we get with renewable energy and energy recycling, I think one day the grid will be useless. Each home, business, car, cell phone, and anything you like will be able to sustain itself!

Did anyone hear about the new Home Efficiency Centers in Sam’s Clubs in Southern California? There are 9 locations about to make solar products available to the everyday consumer to help with our own energy consumption. Here’s an article about it: http://www.amalfiresearch.com/blog/2008/08/solar-panels-for-sale-at-sams-club.html

You should definitely check it out if one is open near you!
